Richard Mille and McLaren Unveil Fourth Collaboration: RM 65-01 McLaren W1

Pairing watches with cars is a long tradition for collectors, as the two often go hand in hand. However, at the highest end of both industries, you’ll find watches and cars designed as a pair. The most classic example is perhaps the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail paired with a custom Bovet watch, but more recently there have been collaborations such as the Jacob & Co. Bugatti Tourbillon with the Bugatti Tourbillon supercar. And now, there’s this: the McLaren W1 supercar paired with the Richard Mille RM 65-01 McLaren W1.

From the front, it’s a beast. It’s powered by a twin-turbocharged V8 engine paired with a hybrid powertrain that produces 1,258 horsepower. The brakes, suspension and 8-speed gearbox are all racing-grade, and combined with a carbon fiber chassis, this makes the W1 the fastest-accelerating street-legal McLaren ever. Its sleek, modern shape and McLaren’s iconic orange and black body give it a calm and serious temperament.

When it comes to the Richard Mille RM 65-01 McLaren W1 watch, its aesthetic design style is clearly a collision with racing cars. The watch measures 43.84mm x 49.94mm x 16.19mm and adopts Richard Mille’s classic barrel-shaped case, which is made of high-tech Carbon TPT material and embellished with titanium metal decoration. The use of carbon fiber material clearly reflects the material of the W1 racing car. In addition, the concave shape of the watch bezel is also influenced by the compact and powerful shape of the racing car’s gull-wing doors.

McLaren’s iconic color is vividly reflected on the watch’s hollow dial. The edges of the outer tachymeter dial, minute dial, split-seconds hand and 12-hour and 30-minute counters are all in the same orange. The chronograph's seconds hand, seconds dial and function selector are in light blue. In contrast to these two colours, the hour, minute and running seconds hands are in bright yellow.

As you may have noticed from the complications above, the RM 65-01 McLaren W1 is a split-second chronograph. This means that it has two central chronograph hands that are placed one on top of the other. When the start button is pressed, both hands move simultaneously at the same speed. You can then stop both hands separately, allowing you to time two separate events happening at the same time. For example, you could time a single lap in a long race, or two competitors in a single race – very useful in F1 events where each team has two cars.

The movement that drives it all is the RMAC4, a high-frequency movement that beats at 5 Hz and has a power reserve of 60 hours. This high frequency allows the split-second chronograph to be even more precise, to within a tenth of a second. The power reserve can also be replenished at any time by switching on the "rapid-winding" mode with the orange quartz TPT pusher. You can see the movement through the skeletonized display and sapphire crystal caseback.

I've said before that I prefer Richard Miller's more understated designs, especially in titanium. But if I had to choose a carbon fiber watch, I'd probably go with this one. I like that it's based on the standard RM 65-01 split-seconds chronograph, changing the dial shape and incorporating McLaren's signature colors. It feels like a fitting tribute to the brand and the McLaren W1 car. I can even imagine it on Lando Norris' wrist on a Grand Prix weekend.
